Iota Mu Programming and Community Service

Over the years, the Iota Mu Chapter has developed unique service projects and events within the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® national framework specifically geared for the Duke University and Durham communities. Throughout the school year, Iota Mu hosts a variety of programs such as career preparedness workshops, financial literacy and wealth management seminars, forums on health and wellness, workout sessions, and panel discussions on a wide range of topics.

Iota Mu has developed several signature programs, including A Toast to Black Women, a forum devoted to discussing mental health in the black community and modes to uplift black women; Black Love, a forum devoted to having a sincere conversation about black relationships on Duke's campus; and our annual charity ball, which serves as a fundraiser for local non-profit organizations.

The Iota Mu Chapter has also participated in various community service projects. Recent projects and sites include the McDougald Terrace Donation Drive, Change Paths Ministry, the John Avery Boys & Girls Club of Durham, voter registration drives with You Can Vote, the Urban Ministries of Durham meal service program, and planting trees with Keep Durham Beautiful. We have collected school supplies and backpacks for the John Avery Boys and Girls Club. We also made over 100 school lunches for the Community Cafe at Urban Ministries. We are truly dedicated to our partnerships with Urban Ministries and the John Avery Boys and Girls Club of Durham.

At the 68th Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, the Iota Mu Chapter received the 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Chapter Program Award, as well as the Undergraduate Achievement Award. The Chapter also received the 2020 NPHC Excellence in Academic Engagement Award, as well as the Excellence in Community Involvement Award.
